North Star History
NORTH STAR CREW HISTORY
During the fall of 1986 Dave Dash and Steve Bumgarner put a proposal together for a volunteer fire crew based in Fairbanks, Alaska. This crew would be selected, supervised, and trained by BLM employees.
During the Winter of 1986 to 1987 the State Director approved the proposal and the North Star Fire Program was born.
Applications were sent out all over Alaska. In April of 1987, Dash and Bumgarner drafted standards of operating procedures and hiring processes and began reviewing applications. With the goal of hiring a volunteer crew of hard working, disciplined, and motivated crew members comprised of local Alaskans.
Since 1987, the North Star Fire Crew has been the foot in the door for Hotshots, Smoke jumpers, Support and administrative personal at AFS and the BLM at large for over 25 years.
