Interagency Aviation Training
It is important to stay qualified in your aviation training so you remain within DOI policy as an aircrew member or helicopter or fixed wing manager. Supervisors are also required to complete and stay current with aviation training if their employees use aircraft to complete bureau missions. Visit the IAT website to be sure your aviation training is up to date.
B-3 Basic Aviation Safety: This course is mandatory for Aircrew Members. This is defined as an employee that works in and around aircraft and is essential to ensure the safety and successful outcome of the mission. If you are anything more than just a passenger, you are an Air Crew Member. This course is required to be taken every three years.
M-3 DOI Aviation Management for Supervisors: This four hour class is a mandatory training for personnel with aviation management responsibilities. M-3 training helps our first and second line supervisors better understand the policies, procedures and best practices regarding the utilization of aviation resources in accomplishing the mission of BLM Alaska.
This course is required for all Aircrew Members. This is defined as: a person working in and around aircraft and is essential to ensure the safety and successful outcome of the mission. Aircrew members are required to either be on board/or attend to the landing and unloading of passengers and cargo at all landings and takeoffs attend to external loads, and endure that passengers have received a safety briefing prior to all special use missions.
The objective of this course is to provide a minimum level of aviation safety training prior to being allowed to participate in non-point to point flight activities. This training consists of the knowledge and awareness necessary to work in and around aircraft without undue risk to themselves, to fellow employees or to the public and responsibility for the safety of passengers.
This course must initially be taken in the classroom. Refreshers can be completed either in the classroom or on-line. Aircrew members are required to complete mandatory training every 3 years.

Those individuals having management or supervisory oversight responsibilities for programs using aviation resources for mission accomplishment, aviation personnel, flight activities, etc. fit within this broad category. This includes Supervisory Personnel, those who supervise employees who use aircraft to accomplish bureau programs. This also includes Line Managers, those who are responsible and accountable for using aviation resources to accomplish bureau programs.
This training is required every three years. The first time you take the M3 course should be done in a classroom setting, refreshers done every three years may be done on-line. I encourage managers both taking it the first time or taking the refresher to take advantage of this training, the Q&A that occurs in the classroom cannot be duplicated on-line.
M-3 training helps our first and second line supervisors better understand the policies, procedures and best practices regarding the utilization of aviation resources in accomplishing the mission of BLM Alaska.
Very few of our programs are able to conduct that mission without relying on aviation, and a clear picture of the risks involved and the methods of mitigating those risks is essential to ensuring that our employees return home safety from the field.
Helicopter Crewmember, S-271: Required for employees that routinely work with helicopters. This course covers helicopter safety and operations, it is a prerequisite to Helicopter Manager.
Helicopter Manager, S-372: Required to becoming a Helicopter Manager. This course teaches individuals contract administration, aviation policy, load calculations and more.
